Sleep Aids

Sleep aids are over the counter sleep aids which are designed to assist in promoting deep, restful sleep patterns. Sleep is an often overlooked ingredient of the modern lifestyle. Our bodies were designed to function optimally based on sleeping 8-9 hours a day, rising with the sun and going to bed early. Hardly, the way the majority of people in the western world sleep now! Sleep aids help ensure adequate rest for people. Lack of sleep can manifest itself in many ways but has been linked to elevated cortisol (a hormone that causes people to accumulate more bodyfat over time), lowered leptin levels (ditto) and a general decrease in physical performance, wellbeing and cognitive function. Sleep aids are designed to remedy this effect. Unfortunately, prescription drug based sleep aids have a host of deleterious effects making them unsuitable for this function except in emergencies.
