Why

For fans of Mars Bars your dreams have been realised as we now have high protein Mars Bars. Mars have retained the taste you will remember and combined it with 19g of protein per bar and moderate levels of carbs. This makes these bars ideal not just for promoting muscle recovery but by supplying 22g of a mix of fast and slow releasing carbs, Mars Protein Bars will fuel performance or, to coin a phrase, help you work, rest and play:)

When

As with any protein bar you can enjoy Mars Protein Bars whenever you like and with just 200 calories they are flexible enough to be used when dieting or bulking.

Who

Chocaholics will obviously love these while those who want a change from the likes of Quest Bars will definitely appreciate the knowledge Mars bring to the protein bar market thanks to their long experience in the confectionery industry.

How it Works

Predator Nutrition Mars Protein Bar Review

Can Mars Really Make a Great Protein Bar?

Predator Nutrition's mission in the industry is to find products that can actually make a difference to how your body performs and and looks which is why the emphasis has always been on innovative ingredients that deliver on these aims no matter what category a product sits in. This is why we were the first in Europe to bring you Quest Bars which took protein bars forward massively a few years ago. We were therefore sceptical as to whether a company like Mars could produce a quality protein bar given the product which spawned Mars Protein Bars is hardly the best choice for athletes unless you are a Sumo Wrestler. Here is our breakdown of Mars Protein Bars to help you decide if this is something you should be eating.

Taste and Texture

For fans of Mars Bars we think they will be pleasantly surprised with the flavour, this really does taste very much like a Mars Bar. It is the texture which is the main difference to a regular bar with these being a little bit drier and denser than a chocolate bar but no protein bar can ever expect to have the softness of a Mars Bar simply because protein is a denser, tougher macronutrient.

All in all we were impressed with these and we would not be surprised if some people even prefer them to a regular Mars Bar! At this point in our review we can say categorically that you will have to go far to find a protein bar which matches up to Mars Protein Bars in this respect.

Nutritional Profile Could be Better

We aren't here to tell you these bars are amazing in this department because quite simply they are not. Compared to protein bars produced by sports nutrition companies like Combat Crunch and Quest, these show all the signs of being produced by a mass market oriented company whose primary focus is on taste with nutritional quality further down in the list of priorities.

While Mars hit a good headline figure of 19 grams of protein per bar it is where the protein comes from that is an issue for us and should be for anyone who when they are buying a bar is focusing on nutritional quality. By using protein mainly from hydrolyzed collagen and soy protein, Mars have elected to focus purely on taste and hitting their 19g of protein without any regard to the quality of the protein. Both collagen and soy have issues with them that makes them less than ideal for a protein bar aimed at athletes, in short they do not promote muscle recovery and growth as good as whey protein and milk protein which are included in Mars Protein Bars at a lower dose.

A Great Tasting Treat to be Eaten Sparingly

In light of what we have discussed above we would have to put these into a category of foods which can be enjoyed by anyone but which should not be relied upon as a staple protein source. Enjoy them as a post-workout snack or an afternoon snack but if you are focused on building muscle we suggest 2-3g of BCAA's with them to compensate for the fact the protein quality is sub-par.

Almost a real mars bar

Chocolate and caramel much like a Real Mars bar Nougat part of the bar is more chewy but considering that it has 19grams of protein its not tough at all, softer and more 'fluffy' then most other bars Definitely try it if you like chocolate protein bars
