Fitness and Supplement Trends in the UK

As health and fitness initiatives are launched across the country to fight obesity, the supplement industry in the UK is certainly picking up. Whilst it is never recommended to mask poor dietary practices and irregular exercise with supplement use, they can be very useful in helping users achieve their goals once the rest of their regime is in check. Although the UK is certainly behind some countries in health and fitness stakes, people are at last starting to take notice of the benefits healthy diet and exercise can bring them. Below are the findings from Predator Nutrition’s investigation into the trends found in the UK’s supplement-using public, examining just how many people are exercising regularly and the driving factors behind training and supplement usage.

Despite government health initiatives, UK fitness and exercise levels are still alarming. In 2009, 38% of UK adults had a raised weight circumference greater than 102cm for men and 88cm for women. Furthermore, over 60% of adults have a body mass index (BMI) rating of overweight or obese. These worrying figures mean there is little surprise that only a third of adults are meeting their recommended physical activity levels.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, over 70% of those adults who do partake in regular exercise would most like to improve their upper body with chest (21%) and arms (19%) leading the way as key body parts trainees would like to improve. Although we have seen many adults currently fail to exercise regularly but of those that do, the amount of time spent exercising per week is a surprisingly large figure with over 90% engaging in physical activity for over 3 hours per week.

When asked what they would do if they didn’t have access to supplements, 51% of supplement users would look to pick some up straight away, with 16% suggesting they would probably be less likely to go the gym, further highlighting the close links between gym attendance and supplement usage. Protein powder (76%) was by far and viewed as the most essential supplement category with multivitamins second with 10% of votes, followed by the increasing popular pre-workout category (9%). The majority of the remaining votes were spread amongst fish oils, creatine and amino acid supplementation.

Clearly, although exercise levels in the general public tend to be inadequate, those that do partake in exercise tend to do so regularly, helping support a healthy lifestyle. Let’s hope the rest of the country joins in over the coming years, shaping a healthy and fit nation for years to come.
