Also known as the Maltese mushroom is a chinese herb containing phenolic compounds, triterpenes, anthocyanins and B-silosterol glucoside.It is harvested and used to strengthen tendons, as an antioxidant and a herb to treat impotence. Schisandra lignans as hormetic anti-oxidants underlies most of the therapeutic, preventative, and (theoretically, not yet demonstrated) life enhancing properties of Schisandra Chinensis in most organ systems Schisandra has been demonstrated to reach (brain, liver, lungs, kidneys, spleen, and heart). Studies have shown circulation increase with supplementation of Schisandra chinensis. It’s proposed that the direct mechanism is due to weak agonism of estrogen receptors, which increases the activity of the NO-cGMP (Nitric oxide, cyclic GMP) pathway and induced endothelial relaxation. This increase in nitric oxide has been noted in both novice and elite athletes. Increased blood flow may underlie improvements in physical performance (not too thoroughly demonstrated), and may in part contribute to neural and hepatic benefits (2).

Has anti-inflammatory effects as it increases expression of Nf-Kb pathway in macrophages which inhibits inflammatory compounds such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF-a), interleukin (Il-1B). One major study in mice looked at using Antrodia Camphorata to improve fatigue symptoms. Biochemical variables such as lactic acid, ammonia, glucose and creatine kinase are indicators of muscle fatigue after exercise. Extracts of the fruit of Antrodia Camphorata were shown to have an anti-fatigue effect by decreasing plasma lactate and ammonia levels, increasing blood glucose concentration and liver and muscle glycogen deposition. Overall this elevated exercise performance in these mice (3).
A small molecule involved in the early phase of porphryin biosynthesis which is responsible for heme production. A deficiency in this amino acid has been shown to cause impaired glucose tolerance and insulin resistance – which can mean bad sugar levels and increased weight. In a recent study, this amino acid helped increased exercise efficiency through positive alterations of oxidative metabolism (4).
Coenzyme Q10 is probably one of the best known antioxidants. Antioxidants are essential in the body to reduce oxidative stress that can damage muscles, bones and DNA. Oxidative stress is produced naturally day to day in normal cellular metabolism, but specifically it is produced after exercise. This can slow down repair and recovery after sessions. Studies have shown that supplementing with CoQ10 is a great way to reduce this oxidative stress and therefore reduce symptoms of fatigue (5).
Myo-inositol trispyrophosphate (ITPP) is an allosteric effector of haemoglobin that increases red blood cells ability to release oxygen. Oxygen delivery is important for maximal muscle function and activity. ITPP is able to cross the red blood cell membrane. ITPP is a synthetic compound derived from myoinositol hexakisphosphate, which is normally produced in mammalian cells and has antioxidant and anti-cancer properties
This means ITPP may increase exercise capacity as it decreases oxygen binding to red blood cells, meaning there is more free oxygen release in the blood travelling to the working muscles (6).
A natural salt that is now being used by athletes to increase erythropoietin (red blood cells). It does this through a chain reaction once cobalt chloride is administered. It generates oxygen reactive species which triggers the stabilisation of “hypoxia inducible factor 1a and the transcription of erythropoietin (Epo) genes. This increases Epo in the plasma and therefore improves anaerobic athletic performance. It peaks at 3.2 hours and displays an absorptive half-life of 0.9 hours, an elimination phase half-life of 3.9 hours, and a terminal elimination half-life of 22.9 hours.
Studies show that hypoxia preconditioning training with cobalt chloride enhances physical performance and protects the muscle from exercised-induced oxidative damage via glutathione, HO-1 and other enzymatic mediated capacities. High levels of cobalt chloride in the body are toxic, but the levels in PLASMA are low that even when taken for the full course, the levels will not build up to toxicity levels (due to half-life of the compound).
