Why

Optimum Nutrition have delivered a knockout in our view with Whipped Bites. While Cake Bites taste good, they can be a little too sweet for some people but with Whipped Bites Optimum have delivered a combination of taste, texture and mouthfeel that has to be tried to be believed and has many in the Predator team declaring it the best protein bar out there as of writing (March 2018!).

When

You can fit in Whipped Bites with just about any type of diet, be it whether you are bulking or dieting and they make for a delicious post-workout or weekend snack.

Who

Anyone and everyone so long as you are not vegan or gluten intolerant. Whipped Bites are also probably better for those who like their carbs.

Predator Nutrition Whipped Bites Review

While Optimum Nutrition remain one of the biggest brands in the sports nutrition industry, their reputation in the protein bar side of things has not been the best. Optimum have released a new bar every year or so for the last 7 or 8 years and the fact most people probably couldn't recall more than a couple is testament to the fact they failed to deliver what people wanted with previous bars.

Optimum Stake Their Claim

However, with the introduction of their phenomenally popular Cake Bites, a product sold by Optimum Nutrition USA, we had waited eagerly to see if the European version of Cake Bites could match or even surpass Cake Bites. With the long awaited launch of Whipped Bites here at last, we can finally put it to the test.

Cake Bites Versus Whipped Bites - Picking a Winner

While Whipped Bites will naturally be compared to Cake Bites due to Optimum investing in manufacturing technology that provides a distinctly aerated, almost fluffy feel to the inside of both products, there are a number of differences between the two products.

Round 1 - Portion Size

First, unlike Cake Bites which includes three, small doughnut shaped pieces of protein bar per wrapper, Whipped Bites opts to go with just two protein parcels per wrapper. Furthermore, while Cake Bites comes in at 21g per bite and thus 63g of total protein bar per wrapper, Whipped Bites, while only delivering two portions, delivers a total of 76g per wrapper, with each portion nearly double the size of a Cake Bite one at 38g per Whipped Bite.

In other words, you get more total bar with Whipped Bites than Cake Bites.

Round 1 goes to Whipped Bites

Round 2 - Macronutrient Quality

You definitely get more for your money with Whipped Bites but upon closer inspection of the label, we can see that while Whipped Bites delivers 20g of protein per wrapped portion of 2 individual Whipped Bites, Cake Bites likewise delivers 20g of protein but with only 63g of total bar in each wrapper of Cake Bites, the actual protein percentage in Cake Bites is better than Whipped Bites while Cake Bites also has slightly less calories.

In addition, when comparing three Cake Bites against two Whipped Bites, Cake Bites also have less fat and carbohydrates. Lastly, while it might be picky, the fact Whipped Bites includes calcium caseinate in its protein blend while Cake Bites does not, is probably something which most people would agree is a point in Cake Bites' favour due to this form of casein protein being relatively more difficult to digest for those with issues handling dairy proteins.

Round 2 goes to Cake Bites

Round 3 - Which Tastes Better?

Macronutrients is important, especially for a brand like Optimum but at least in Europe, we find that consumers choose taste and texture before nutritional quality when selecting a bar and so this is probably the most important of all for Optimum to see if Whipped Bites can last more than a year or so.

We have tried all the different flavours of Whipped Bites as well as Cake Bites and we would say that for those with a preference for all things sweet, then Cake Bites may be the one you prefer. However, we have found that amoung Europeans, the preference tends to run towards a slighly lower amount of sweetness and Whipped Bites have delivered in a big way in our opinion by hitting the perfect balance between making you want to have more without then making you feel sick if you have too many.

Furthermore, while the texture of these two is fairly similar, our team when sampling Whipped Bites generally preferred their texture and indeed, two of the members of our sales team went so far as to declare that this wasn't just a better bar than Cake Bites but that it was the best bar they have ever had and it was not even a close contest.

Round 3 goes to Whipped Bites

Overall Winner - Whipped Bites

Judge for yourself but based on their arguments alone we have to score this one for the UK manufacturer Whipped Bites over the American contender.

ON Salted Caramel Protein Whipped Bites

I gave these a try while I was on a protein bar kick and they were one of the better ones that I sampled. 20g of protein for 244 calories isn't bad for a good-tasting protein bar. A good option when you're craving sweets. I would definitely recommend this for people shopping for protein bars.

Light and Fluffy Protein Bars

These bars are very light and tasty. Easily digestible and good protein content.
